FE Report
The government has revised upward its fertiliser import target by nearly 0.3 million tonnes for the current fiscal year, fearing substantial shortfall in the domestic outpout of the agricultural input.
Under the revised target, the government will be importing a record 1.35 million tonnes of urea fertiliser this fiscal against the original target of 1.05 million tonnes set for the year, official sources said.
Of the total target, the government will import 0.45 million tonnes of urea from the Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company Limited (KAFCO) and the remaining 0.9 million tonnes from abroad.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the monitoring committee on fertiliser Wednesday after reviewing the country's overall demand-supply situations of urea, they said.
The meeting, however, directed the authorities concerned to ensure smooth supply of fertiliser to the farmers, especially during the current 'aman' season.
The interim government formed the high-powered monitoring committee, headed by Education Adviser Auyub Quadri, nearly two months back.
