FE REPORT | September 16, 2023 00:00:00

Consumers still had to pay higher prices for onions, potatoes, eggs, sugar and edible oil though the government on Thursday fixed the prices of these essential items.

On Thursday, the commerce ministry set the maximum retail price (MRP) of an egg at Tk 12, onion at Tk 65 per kg, potato at Tk 36 per kg, branded sugar at Tk 135 per kg, non-brand sugar at Tk 120 per kg, branded soybean oil at Tk 169 a litre, non-brand soybean oil at Tk 149 a litre and palm oil at Tk 124 per litre.

But anti-price manipulation raids in major cities on Friday found eggs were still selling at Tk 13.3-13.5 each, onions at Tk 70-90 per kilogram, potatoes at Tk 48-55 per kilogram, sugar at Tk 140-150 per kilogram, branded soybean oil at Tk 179 a litre and palm oil at Tk 150 a litre.

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) on Friday fined 90 companies and traders Tk 0.237 million for overcharging for these products and some medicines.

The directorate conducted operations in 53 markets with its 41 teams in all divisions and districts of the country, including the Dhaka Metropolitan area.

Three teams conducted operations in Mirpur Shah Ali Market, Mirpur-1 Bazar, Karwan Bazar, Shantinagar Bazar, Malibag Kacha Bazar, Jatrabari and Qutubkhali Bazar.

Director General of the consumer rights directorate AHM Sjafiquzzaman said strict monitoring would continue to ensure compliance with the government's fixed prices.
