Around 30 ready-made garment (RMG) workers, including females, were injured in clashes with policemen while they were staging demonstrations demanding salary hike in the city's Mirpur area Tuesday morning, reports UNB.

Witnesses said the workers of SQ Garment Factory came out to the street and staged demonstration to press for a raise in their salaries at about 8:00am.

Soon, workers of the adjoining garment factories also joined in the agitation.

When the agitating workers went wild, police tried to resist them by clubbing, leading to attack and counter-attack, according to a spot account of the latest eruption of unrest in the apparel industry.

During the chase and counter-chase that lasted almost 3 hours, the angry workers used brickbats targeting policemen and damaged some vehicles.

Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Police Station Mohiuddin told reporters that they arrested 12 workers from the scene on charges of violating law and order.

Vehicular movement on the Rokeya Sarani was disrupted for one hour due to the clashes.

The injured readymade garment workers were admitted to different hospitals and clinics in the city.
