RMG workers put up road barricade for unpaid wages

Thousands of garment workers Monday blockaded Dhaka-Sylhet Highway for more than two hours demanding arrear wages and other financial benefits that caused immense sufferings to road users.
Witnesses said nearly 4,000 workers of Antim Knitting, Dyeing and Antim Composite set up barricade on the highway at around 9:00am and damaged at least eight stranded vehicles.
The protestors also damaged some apparel units at Rupganj Industrial Zone, Officer-in-Charge of Rupganj police station Forkan Sikder said.
The agitating workers withdrew their blockade at about 11:00am following assurance from the factory owners of payment of their wages within May 15. The workers also demanded payment of monthly wages by 10th of every month.
The country's largest export earning sector had witnessed a violent unrest last month when thousands of workers ransacked dozens of factories at Narayanganj, Tongi, Savar and Mirpur industrial hubs demanding a minimum monthly wages of Tk 5,000.
The vandalism had forced authorities of at least 100 factories to suspend production temporarily.
