Salman out as BB reconstitutes IFIC board

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) has dissolved the board of IFIC Bank, led by controversial industrialist Salman F Rahman, and reconstituted a six-member board to run it.
It restructured the board on Wednesday with a view to protecting the interests of the bank and its depositors across the country.
The new board comprises four independent directors and two government representatives, according to a Bangladesh Bank (BB) statement.
The independent directors are former managing director Md Mehmud Hossain of National Bank Ltd, ex-executive director Ebtadul Islam of Bangladesh Bank, economics professor Sazzad Zahir of BRAC University and chartered accountant Kazi Md Mahbub Kashem.
On the other hand, government representatives are additional secretary Md Golam Mostafa and joint secretary Muhammad Manzarul Haque of the Finance Division.
The government owns 32.75 percent shares of the bank.
Salman F Rahman, a shareholder of the bank and ex-adviser to the recently ousted premier Sheikh Hasina, is behind bars in connection with several cases filed over irregularities perpetrated during the Awami League's 15-year regime.
