Seize Benazir's assets: Court

'Freeze 33 bank accounts'

FE REPORT | May 24, 2024 00:00:00

Benazir Ahmed

A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered the government authorities concerned to seize assets involving 83 deeds of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.

It also asked them to freeze a total of 33 accounts in different banks.

Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan confirmed the matter to the FE.

Earlier on April 22 this year, the ACC said it initiated an enquiry into the corruption allegations against Benazir Ahmed that surfaced in different media.

The watchdog also formed a three-member committee to investigate the accusations, ACC secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen told the media at a briefing at the ACC headquarters the same day.

She said legal action would be taken against the former police chief as per the conventional ACC laws after a probe.

She said the anti-graft body approved investigation into the allegations against Mr Benazir on April 18 after several media outlets reported that the former IGP had illegally amassed a huge fortune.

A national Bangla daily recently published a series of reports on amassing wealth by Mr Benazir.

According to the reports, the former police chief has accumulated huge assets, which are not consistent with his income as a civil servant.
