FE REPORT | June 23, 2022 00:00:00

The government has extended the closure time of shops, markets and shopping malls by additional two hours for a temporary period from next month ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Shops, markets and shopping malls will remain shut after 10.0 pm from July 01- July 10, according to a labour ministry statement.

The existing closure after 8.0pm daily would again be effective after July 10, added the ministry circular.

It also said workers would be entitled to overtime for additional working hours according to the labour law.

The ministry explained that the temporary extension has been given taking the special situation ahead of Eid-ul-Azha into consideration in line with the sub-provision of 4 under the labour law provision 114.

Earlier the Prime Minister had instructed to keep shops, markets and shopping malls closed after 8.0 pm daily to save electricity in the face of energy and power price hike globally.

Later State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian on June 19, after a meeting with businesses including shops owners, announced that the PM's instruction will be effective from June 20.

Shop owners at the meeting, however, requested the Prime Minister to allow their business activities for additional two hours till 10 pm from July 01 to July 10 ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

The minister then said that she would apprise the PM of their demand.
