Skeptical of justice as judiciary not independent: Khaleda

February 08, 2018 00:00:00

Alleging that the country's trial system has been turned into a mockery, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia said on Wednesday she was doubtful about getting justice today (Thursday) and asserted that she would not bow down, report agencies.

"As the judiciary is not independent, I'm doubtful about getting justice tomorrow (Thursday). I'm telling you [people] that Khaleda Zia was not involved in any corruption or crime, "she said.

She was speaking at a media briefing at her Gulshan office as a Dhaka court is scheduled to announce the verdict in the Zia Orphanage Trust case today.

The former prime minister and five others, including her son Tarique Rahman stand accused of embezzling Tk 21 million from foreign donation meant for the Trust.

"I believe the court will acquit me of all charges," Khaleda said. "It's a false case and a tool to harass me and my family."

The Special Court-5 will deliver its verdict in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case filed against Khaleda and five others.

The former prime minister faces up to life in prison, if found guilty of the charges, which means she will be disqualified for the next parliamentary polls.

Khaleda Zia further said, "There is no justice, no insaf in the country. There's no security of people here. The trial process has been turned into a mockery through interference and politicisation. People want to get rid of the situation. They're looking to BNP."

"I'm ready to face any circumstances. It's useless to threaten me with jail term. I won't bow down and turn back from the struggle aimed at establishing people's rights. They [govt] want to keep me away from politics using the court. But, I think, they won't be able to score in the empty field this time like in 2014," she said.
