The revenue board has undertaken a special action plan to net the big tax evaders in the capital during the month of December aiming to strengthen the tax-base before the next elected government assumes office.
The NBR has started the programme from December 1 (Monday) after 10 months of motivational programmes in divisional cities and Upazilla that concluded in November.
The NBR is also preparing a paper on the latest up-dates for the next elected government to provide a clear and specific scenario on tax collection, said the National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman Muhammad Abdul Mazid.
The paper will help the incumbent government to draw action plans for the subsequent six months on achieving the revenue target of Tk 545 billion for the current fiscal, he said.
"In December, taxmen will scrutinise income and tax payment of well-off section of people in the capital city through different sources," he added.
The NBR will now concentrate on the capital after having completed the countrywide programme sourcing for new taxpayers, he added.
"Revenue board high officials will visit at least one tax offices in the city every day in December to closely inspect payment and collection of tax," the NBR chief said.
The NBR will collect information about owners of luxury car from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to see whether they are paying due taxes or not, he said.
The NBR has directed the tax commissioners to prepare a list of big tax evaders and take legal action checking their TINs.
The revenue board has also asked all tax commissioners to detect the taxable person in their respective zones who are yet to come under tax net.
As the time for disclosure of undeclared income expired in October, people having undisclosed income will have to pay 10-50 per cent penal tax for cumulative five years if taxmen are able to detect their undeclared income.
The revenue board will simultaneously move for increasing the number of TIN holders to strengthen tax-base.
The board has directed all tax zones to issue TIN (taxpayers' identification number) to the new taxpayers' by December 21.
The NBR has found over 1,00,000 potential new taxpayers in a countrywide survey in businesses and professional houses.
The board for the first time this year has carried out a massive campaign to motivate marginal new taxpayers' in district and Upazilla levels.
Campaign for self-motivated new taxpayers', that began in February last, has been able to add nearly 94,000 TIN holders with the existing number of taxpayers.
The NBR, for the first time, has carried out a scrutiny to identify fake and duplicate TINs. The board has canceled 40,000 TINs that were obtained for different purpose but remained unidentified.
The NBR chairman and its high officials has moved throughout the country in the last 10 months to cultivate tax-culture among the people and interact with the taxmen to ensure a hassle-free tax payment environment.
