FE Report
Price of sugar increased by over 30 per cent to Tk 64 per kg on Sunday, which was Tk 48 a week ago as a vested quarter was spreading rumours of sugar shortage in the country.
Sugar refineries has been supplying sufficient quantity of sugar to the market at a rate of Tk 39 at the mill gate and there is no reason for the price to increase, said a commerce ministry press release.
"The refiners are supplying about 4,000 tonnes of sugar everyday and another refiner, S Alam, will start selling 1,200 tonnes each day very soon," it said.
A ship laden with 27,500 tonnes of sugar reached the port on September 12 and over 0.1 million tonnes of raw sugar will reach the Chittagong port this month and in the first week of next month another 0.115 million tonnes will arrive.
The refiners are selling sugar at Tk 42 per kg in 11 points in the city and they will appoint dealers throughout the country soon to cut the middlemen cost, the press release added.
