Suspected killer held, confesses incident

An assistant accountant of the Public Works Department (PWD) was arrested Monday as suspected killer of Supreme Court (SC) lawyer Sayma Khanom in the city's New Market area, reports UNB.
The arrested person was identified as Foyzul Islam (26), a PWD assistant accountant, hailed from Khalishpur village under Raipura Upazila in Narsingdi district. He resides in PWD staff quarter at Tejgaon in the city.
Advocate Sayma Khanum (35), former cultural secretary of Dhaka Bar Association, was slaughtered at her apartment on the 2nd floor of 'Prince Tower' at 135/A, Elephant Road, on July 17.
Following the sensational murder, the victim's husband, Jahirul Islam, filed a case with New Market thana.
Acting on a tip-off, a RAB-2 team run in Foyzul while passing by the New Market area at about 4.00 pm.
The junior PWD accounts officer told reporters that he had Tk 1.2 million (12 lakh) due from Sayma as she took the money in the name of providing job in the post of sub-inspector (SI) and also helping him in passing 27th BCS test.
On the fateful day, Foyzul, along with his three accomplices, went to her residence for getting back the money that didn't work for the purposes. As Sayma declined to pay back the money, they got angry and slaughtered her with a knife, according to his confessional statement to the elite force.
"We had no intention to kill her," said Foyzul.
Responding to a query, a RAB official said, "We cannot tell the name of his cohorts for the sake of investigation."
