The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday demanded immediate release of its jailed party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia ahead of the general elections.

At the same time, party leaders and activists demanded quick steps from the government to ensure necessary treatment of Zia at the United Hospital where she used to check up.

The demands came at a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

As part of the pre-scheduled programme, hundreds of leaders and activists of the party gathered the place and formed a human chain there.

Speaking at the programme, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the ruling party detained Begum Zia illegally, although she managed to secure bail from the higher court.

"She has to be freed. No election without her (Zia) would be allowed to take place," he warned.

He said the current parliament will have to be dissolved alongside reconstituting the Election Commission to create an inclusive polls environment.

For ensuring a level-playing field, he demanded the deployment of military during the election days for the sake of a free, fair and credible election.

He was, however, critical of the role of the law enforcing agencies for creating obstacles to peaceful processions and demonstrations in other parts of the country.

Party sources claimed that several party men were picked up by the law enforcing men on their way to the programme.

Dr Khandokar Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Moin Khan, Abdullah Al Noman, Aman Ullah Aman, Dr ABM Obaidul Islam and other senior party leaders were also present at the human chain.
