Amidst the scorching heat in various parts of the country, a severe heatwave is sweeping over Chuadanga and Rajshahi districts, report agencies.
High temperatures are expected to persist across the country for three more days, according to meteorologists. In Chuadanga, the mercury has been steadily rising, shooting over 41 degrees Celsius for the first time this season in early summer. The highest temperature in Rajshahi also hit 41 degrees Celsius on Friday.
The highest temperature in Chuadanga was recorded at 41.3 degrees Celsius on Friday, as reported by Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman. Earlier, the district recorded 40.6, 40.8 and 40.4 degrees Celsius, respectively on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, he said.
The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning for the next 72 hours in the district.
The district recorded a high of 39.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday and 40.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
"The prevailing heatwave over the country may continue and intensify further during the next 72 hours", Bangladesh Meteorological Department's Deputy Director Abul Kalam Mallik warned in a notice.
Due to increasing humidity, the discomfort may increase, he added.
Speaking to bdnews24.com, the meteorologist said the heatwave may continue past the three days covered by the forecast.
The local authorities in Chuadanga arranged announcements on loudspeakers to raise public awareness of the dangers of heat stroke and other health risks from extreme heat.
Shahidul Islam, a senior observer at Rajshahi Weather Observatory, said a fall in the moisture level in the district led to the rise in temperature.
In the forecast for Saturday, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said day and night temperature may rise slightly across the country.
Rain is likely to occur only at one or two places in Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions while weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy skies elsewhere over the country.
Azgar Hossain, a battery-run van driver, and Liakat Ali, a rickshaw-puller of Chuadanga town, said that they couldn't do anything due to the sweltering heat. They don't have passengers as very few people come out of their homes. As a result, they are struggling to run their family with less income.
Farhad Hossain, a grocer in Mominpur area of Chuadanga Sadar Upazila, said, "The sale is low due to the hot temperature. People are passing their time sitting and lying on the benches."
Latifun Nahar, a resident of Gulshanpara in Chuadanga, said that she is suffering a lot with her babies. "We can't stay indoors due to the intense heat. My 3-year-old child fell ill due to severe heat," she added.
According to BMD's weather bulletin on Friday morning, a severe heatwave is sweeping over the districts of Bagerhat, Jashore, Chuadanga and Kushtia and a mild to moderate heatwave is sweeping over Dhaka & Rajshahi divisions and the districts of Dinajpur, Rangamati, Chandpur, Khulna, Satkhira, Barishal and Patuakhali and it may continue.
