The government Monday appointed new managing directors (MDs) and chief executive officers (CEOs) to ten public banks, officials said, amid sweeping changes in the post-uprising interim period.
The Financial Institutions Division (FID) of the Ministry of Finance appointed four MDs through departmental promotion while sending names of six bankers to the chairmen of six state-owned commercial banks (SoCBs) to complete the procedures for their appointments in the top-level shakeup.
According to a notification issued by the ministry, Sonali Bank DMD Mir Mofazzal Hossain has been promoted and appointed MD of Ansar-VDP Unnayan Bank, Bangladesh Krishi Bank DMD Salma Banu has been appointed MD of Palli Sanchay Bank, Sonali Bank DMD Sanchita Binte Ali has been promoted as the MD of Bangladesh Krishi Bank and Bangladesh Krishi Bank DMD Chanu Gopal Ghosh has been appointed MD of Probashi Kalyan Bank.
Sources say current MD of Bangladesh Krishi Bank Md Shawkat Ali Khan has been proposed as the MD of Sonali Bank, MD of Prabasi Kalyan Bank Md Mojibur Rahman has been proposed to be MD of Janata Bank, former DMD of Agrani Bank Md Anwarul Islam has been proposed as the MD of the same bank, and DMD of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank Md Abdur Rahim as MD of Rupali Bank.
Besides, former DMD of Janata Bank Md Jasim Uddin has been proposed as MD of Bangladesh Development Bank and another former DMD of Janata Bank, Md Kamruzzaman Khan, as MD of BASIC Bank.
"We've asked chairmen of all the six SoCBs through sending separate letters to appoint new MDs of their banks," Amal Krishna Mandal, Additional Secretary of FID, told the FE later in the day.
He said four other DMDs have been promoted as MDs for specialised banks.
Earlier on 19 September, the government ordered six SoCBs - Sonali, Janata, Agrani, Rupali, Bangladesh Development Bank and Basic Bank - to cancel the remaining terms of the contracts with their MDs. Since then, the MD posts of these banks remained vacant.
