Tenders floated to import 3 spot LNG cargoes amid tensions

FE REPORT | March 10, 2026 00:00:00

Bangladesh has floated tenders to buy three more liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes from the spot market by mid-April amid escalating Middle East tensions and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

State-run Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Ltd (RPGCL) has invited bids for deliveries over the April 5-6, April 9-10 and April 12-13 windows.

Each spot LNG cargo will contain approximately 3.36 million MMBtu, according to an official.

The bid-submission deadline is March 10, said a senior official of Petrobangla.

The cargoes are to be delivered to Moheshkhali Island, with an option to discharge at either of the country's two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) located on the island.

RPGCL, a subsidiary of Petrobangla, is responsible for LNG trading in Bangladesh.

According to an RPGCL official, this is the second tender floated during the current global energy uncertainty triggered by the Middle East conflict.

Bangladesh earlier floated tenders to purchase two LNG cargoes from the spot market last week and subsequently awarded them to Gunvor Singapore Pte Ltd and Vitol Asia Pte Ltd for the March 15-16 and March 18-19 delivery windows at US$28.28 per million British thermal units (MMBTu) and US$23.08 per MMBtu respectively.

If successful, the country's total spot LNG purchases this year would rise to seven cargoes, the RPGCL official said.

Until March 1, 2026, Bangladesh had imported only two spot LNG cargoes this year, he added.

Bangladesh imported a total of 49 LNG cargoes from the spot market in 2025, according to RPGCL data.

The country typically purchases LNG from the spot market periodically, though it also has long-term LNG sales and purchase agreements (SPAs) with QatarEnergy, Oman and the United States, as well as short-term SPAs with Saudi Arabia and Oman.

QatarEnergy on March 4 declared force majeure on LNG and related product supplies to affected buyers after halting production on March 2.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global shipping route for energy supplies.

Since LNG imports began in 2018, Bangladesh has imported approximately 35.39 million tonnes of LNG through 571 cargoes as of January 2026, according to RPGCL data.

Bangladesh's overall natural gas supply currently stands at around 2,550 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), including about 842 mmcfd of regasified LNG, against a demand of more than 4,000 mmcfd, according to official Petrobangla data as of March 8, 2026.
