The Khagrachhari district administration has imposed Section 144 amid tensions between Bengalis and hill peoples after a schoolteacher was beaten to death, reports bdnews24.com.
A teacher from Khagrachhari Government Technical School and College was beaten to death, Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Md Shahiduzzaman told the media.
"To prevent any untoward incidents, Section 144 has been imposed in the Sadar area. Law enforcers have been deployed. The situation in the town is tense."
The deceased has been identified as Sohel Rana, an instructor in the Department of Civil Construction and Safety at the school.
A group of students beat Sohel to death in a room at the school in the afternoon after accusing him of rape, according to witnesses and locals.
The incident led to tensions between the Bengalis and hill people of the district town.
After the incident, there were clashes between the two sides in the Chengi Square and Mahajanpara areas.
The police, army, and other law enforcers arrived at the scene and eventually brought the situation under control.
The district administration imposed Section 144 indefinitely from 3pm to control the situation.
Several attempts were made to contact the local police station and the school authorities over the incident, but they did not make any statements.
