BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas on Friday warned that the country's territorial integrity would be at risk if the national election is not held by December this year.
Mr Abbas voiced the warning in reply to the comment Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus made at the Nikkei Forum in Japan on Thursday saying that only a party was demanding that the national election be held by December.
"And if they don't want to hold an election-- then that is Yunus's responsibility, not ours. We, the nation and the people, will have the election held... otherwise, the geographical integrity of this country may not be intact," he maintained.
Mr Abbas said these while speaking to journalists after paying tributes to BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman at his grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the occasion of his 44th death anniversary.
The BNP senior leader also alleged that Yunus tarnished the image of the BNP and the country abroad.
"I'm saying it with great sadness that I saw Muhammad Yunus sitting in Japan and defaming the BNP. He didn't feel even a little shame while defaming the country sitting abroad," Mr Abbas said.
"He said that a party wants election. And we want to say that one person doesn't want election... He is Yunus," he added.
"BNP has always wanted election to be held by December and Yunus himself said about this December, we did not say... This is his proposal. Later he shifted it to June. If he talks about election in June, this election will never be held in Bangladesh. If election has to be held, it should be held by December," he continued.
Meanwhile, at a separate event on the day, BNP senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed said that whenever the Chief Adviser called, the political parties discussed with him. All the parties demanded quick election. But it is not clear why the Chief Adviser blamed BNP for the election.
Mentioning that all the nations are waiting for the election, he demanded that the election roadmap be announced soon and the election be held by December this year.
He also demanded the trial of ousted Prime Minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina and her allies.
