The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has detected suspicious financial transactions worth over Taka 1.27 billion (127 crore) in bank accounts linked to Faisal Karim Masud, the main accused in the murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, and his associates, report agencies.
Based on information from law enforcement and intelligence agencies, the CID has launched a money laundering probe under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
Special Police Super of the CID (media) Md Jasim Uddin Khan confirmed this to the media.
Following the December 12 shooting of Osman Hadi in Dhaka's Purana Paltan, the CID began a shadow investigation, collecting CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and bank records. Analysis of seized checkbooks indicates unfinished transactions totalling around Taka 2.18 billion (218 crore).
Although Faisal remains at large, several family members and associates have been arrested for aiding his escape and concealing evidence.
The CID has also initiated legal steps to confiscate about Taka 6.5 million (65 lakh) from related bank accounts and is investigating possible links to organized crime, illegal arms financing, and a wider criminal network behind the murder.
A court in Dhaka on Sunday further put two youths -- Sibion Dew, 32, and Sanjay Chisim, 22, who allegedly aided Hadi's murderers to flee to India through illegal routes -- were put on fresh five-day remand for more quizzing in connection with the Sharif Osman Hadi shooting case.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah granted them a five-day remand as Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Faisal Ahmed, the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, placed them before the court. The two remanded accused have directly assisted the alleged prime suspects, Faisal Karim Masud Rahul Dawood, 37, and his accomplice, in fleeing to India illegally, according to evidence and technical assistance, the IO mentioned.
Accused Sibion Dew is the nephew of former Awami League MP Jewel Areng of Haluaghat and Dhubaura upazilas.
According to bdnews24.com, police are still unaware of the whereabouts of Faisal Karim, the key suspect in the killing of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, though nine days have passed since he was shot in Dhaka.
At a joint media briefing held at the Secretariat on Sunday evening, representatives from police headquarters, the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DMP), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said they were making "maximum efforts" to apprehend Faisal.
