Tk 6.0m stolen from Janata Bank vault

GAZIPUR, Dec 14 (UNB): Criminals stole Tk 6.0 million (60 lakh) from the state-owned Janata Bank's Gazipur corporate branch at Joydevpur Bazar in Gazipur early on Sunday by doping its security guard.
Police arrested the security guard named Nurul Islam,50, following the incident.
Officer-in-charge of Joydevpur police station Syed Abul Hasem said Zakir, a cloth trader of Tanvir Plaza at Joydevepur Bazar, entered the bank, housed on the second floor of the market, tactfully with some fruits around 10 pm on Saturday.
When the security guard fell unconscious after eating the fruits, Zakir and his associates broke open the vault and stole the money.
They fled the scene breaking open a window.
Another report adds:Hot on the heels of the thievery in Gazipur muggers back in the capital city snatched Tk 1.8 million (18 lakh) from men who were ready to enter the Janata Bank (JB) branch in the city's Shyampur area.
The incident of snatching happened around 1pm on Sunday.
Kadamtali police station OC Md Abdus Salam said: "Three to four persons led by Beximco Pharma's Supervisor Harun Ur Rashid went to the bank to deposit the money. As soon as they reached the stairs muggers armed with sharp weapons beat them up and fled with the cash."
The incident happened just half an hour after a media call by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) over the mugging of Tk 2 million from the capital's Khilgaon area.
On Saturday, detectives arrested four persons in possession with arms over the Dec 7 mugging, when miscreants shot shopkeeper Abdus Salam and snatched the money from him.
The arrestees are 'Moshtak', 'Sohel' alias 'Banuti', 'Russell' and 'Arzu'.
At Sunday's press conference, DMP Deputy Commissioner Krishnapada Roy said that two pistols, four magazines, a few rounds of ammunition and two motorcycles were confiscated from the four.
Earlier on January 25, burglars had tunneled to the vault of Sonali Bank's main branch in Kishoreganj district town and pilfered about Tk 164 million (16.40 crore).
Barely in one and a half months after the incident in Kishoreganj, burglars again pilfered Tk 3.25 million (32.51 lakh) from another branch of Sonali Bank in Bogra after digging a tunnel to its vault on March 8.
