FE Report
Burglars broke into a garment factory office in the capital early Thursday and ran away with Tk10 million cash meant for bonus and salary payments of more than a thousand workers, police said.
Dhaka police said the money was stolen from the head office of the GMS Composite Knitting Industries located at the city's heavily fortified Mohakhali Dohs area - home to hundreds of retired army officers.
Chief accountant of the company Ahsanul Haq said they found the backdoor of the office broken and the locker --- where he kept the cash --- open as they came to join work at about 8.00am.
"We drew the cash from a bank on Tuesday for payment of bonus and salaries to our workers," he said.
Kafrul Police Station sub-inspector Moniruzzaman said they took up the case as a "possible burglary", as the burglars also took away cash and valuables worth Tk1.5 million from another office located at the same building.
But garment workers whose Eid-ul-Azha celebrations were shattered by the robbery alleged that the theft was stage-managed by the owners to deprive the factory's thousand plus labourers.
"None would believe that such a daring robbery could take place at the Mahakhali Dohs area," said an official.
"I have never heard that this kind of incident has happened at Dohs area. It's a heavily secured and restricted area. All the retired generals, brigadiers and colonels live here," he said.
Caretaker of the building Zafar Ali said he saw a tenant leaving the building along with his four friends after Wednesday mid-night.
Zakir Hossain, an official of the company, filed a case with Kafrul police station Thursday evening in connection with the burglary.
