Trading on the country's two bourses -- Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) -- resumes today (Wednesday) after a six-day gap due to Eid and Christmas holidays.
The bourses remained closed for two extended days between the three-day Eid-ul-Azha holiday from Thursday through Saturday and Tuesday's Christmas celebration.
Small investors, however, were unhappy with the decision of the DSE management to suspend the trading for two more days (Sunday and Monday) although the banks and other government offices functioned in those two days.
"We did not receive cash money from share transactions done on December 19, the last working day before the Eid holiday due to the unwanted prolonged holiday," an investor said.
He said the DSE brokerage houses could earn an estimated Tk 15 million as commission fee from the two days' transactions worth Tk 3.0 billion.
"The DSE management should have strongly considered the interest of the investors and also the financial benefits of the bourse. The bourse should function in line with the working days of the commercial banks," another market operator told the FE.
He said since the daily average turnover of DSE has whopped in recent months the management of the country's prime bourse should not suspend trading without any valid reason.
The daily average turnover rose 23.56 per cent at Tk 1.30 billion in the week from, December 17 to December 19 against Tk 1.05 billion of the previous week.
However, the daily average turnover of DSE hovered between Tk 200 million and Tk 250 million only in 2006.
