FE Report
A government committee Sunday decided to attach priority to the construction of a metro sub-way among all proposed infrastructure projects aimed at improving future traffic management in the capital.
Communication adviser MA Matin, who heads the committee, took the decision at a meeting after comparing the proposed tube train project with other proposals such as elevated express-way and mono-rail, said a ministry press release.
The meeting also decided to start the procedure that, according to the ministry officials, may take at least two years time to complete.
The proposal to have a metro sub-way was first mooted in 2003-04 fiscal.
The immediate past government made significant progress on a proposal submitted by a private company to execute the project at cost of more than US $ 900 million.
The present caretaker government, however, has opted for starting the entire process anew to maintain transparency, said the officials.
The meeting was told that Dhaka, with its present population of 1.35 million, was the eighth most populated cities of the world. The annual growth rate of the city's population is 3.02 per cent and vehicles 8.1 per cent.
The present number of vehicles plying in the streets of the Dhaka city is more than 0.4 million compared to 35,458 in 1971.
The meeting was also told that recommendations to bring about changes in the 20-year long strategic transport plan (STP) awaited the approval of the advisory council.
