Additional attorneys general Murad Reza and Momtaz Uddin Fakir resigned from their posts on Sunday, three days after the appointment of AM Amin Uddin as the attorney general (AG).

Momtaz Uddin submitted his resignation letter to the solicitor department of the attorney general's office in the morning while Murad Reza sent his resignation letter directly to the law ministry.

In the resignation letters, both of them cited personal reasons for stepping down from the posts.

The new development came as Amin Uddin took over as the attorney general on the day. Later, he also participated in a hearing.

After the court functions, lawyers met the new attorney general at his office and congratulated him. At that time, Amin Uddin sought cooperation of all in discharging his duties.

When contacted, Law Minister Anisul Huq said, "Two additional attorneys general have resigned. The recruitment process for the two posts will start soon."

"I think the functions of the attorney general's office will not be hampered due to the resignations of Murad Reza and Momtaz Uddin Fakir," he added.

Advocate Murad Reza has been serving as the additional attorney general since March 27, 2009 and Advocate Momtaz Uddin was appointed to the post on July 04, 2010. Contacted, Advocate Murad Reza declined to give details about the reasons behind his resignation.

Advocate Momtaz Uddin said he decided to resign from the post much earlier because of some personal reasons. President Md Abdul Hamid appointed Amin Uddin, a senior lawyer and the president of Supreme Court Bar Association, as the 16th attorney general of the country on October 08.

The post fell vacant after Attorney General Mahbubey Alam passed away on September 27.
