Dengue situation has taken a serious turn in the country as 820 patients were hospitalised and two others died in 24 hours till Saturday.

It is the highest single-day hospitalisation with the mosquito-borne disease this season. Of them, 603 patients were admitted to 53 hospitals in Dhaka and the remaining 217 elsewhere in the country.

The number of hospitalised dengue patients and death toll reached to 12,118 and 67 respectively so far this year.

Currently, 2,502 people are getting treatment in several hospitals across the country, a regular bulletin of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.

Within the first eight days of this month, 20 deaths have been reported from dengue. A total of 34 people died due to dengue last month.

Meanwhile, Dhaka city authorities have strictly accelerated their activities to control the mosquito menace.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Saturday began a month-long mosquito repellent drive.

On the first day, DNCC mobile courts filed 17 cases and realised fine of Tk 1.5 million from the people for not taking measures to prevent mosquito breeding places in different areas including Mohammadpur and Uttara.

With the presence of DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam, DNCC Executive Magistrates Nasir Uddin Mahmud and Mahbub Hasan conducted a mobile court.

DNCC Mayor said he would make sudden visit to any area in his jurisdiction to know the real situation.

"I will go on a surprise visit to different wards without informing anyone to see the actual situation," he said.

On the other hand, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is starting again a three-day special drives in 30 wards of its jurisdiction from today (Sunday).

A DSCC letter said the city corporation workers will conduct their activities relentlessly, including spraying mosquito repellents and larvicide to prevent mosquito menace in the city.
