Two more die of dengue fever

Unofficial death toll climbs to over 100

Two persons, including a housewife, died of dengue fever on Sunday as the number of patients infected with the viral disease across the country declined by 6.0 per cent, the official data showed.

Sumi Akhter (30), wife of Anwar Fakir, of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur district, died in the early hours of Sunday on her way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment, Dr Abdul Mokaddos of Shibchar Upazila Health Complex said.

He said Sumi was diagnosed with dengue positive and admitted to the health complex on August 20. "We suggested that she be taken to DMCH as her condition deteriorated," he added.

Besides, a 55-year-old man identified as Fazlur Rahman died at DMCH at about 1:30 am on Sunday, DMCH sources confirmed.

With the latest deaths, the unofficial death toll has risen to over 100. However, the state-run Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) put the figure at 47.

In the last 24 hours until 8:00 am on Sunday, a total of 1,299 people were hospitalized, slightly up from 1,179 that was reported in the previous 24 hours until 8:00 am on Saturday.

Statistics on the mosquito-borne disease was provided by the health emergency operation centre and control room under DGHS.

Of the fresh dengue cases, 692 were reported from outside the capital city while the figure was 607 in Dhaka.

With the latest ones, the overall tally of the dengue-affected people rose to a new high of 63,514 since January, 2019. Of them, 57,405 people returned home after receiving treatment.

The data showed that the number of hospitalised-dengue patients declined to 5,940 from Saturday's 6,249.

DGHS prepared the data after collecting information from 11 government and 30 private hospitals.

According to DGHS, it has received information about 168 dengue-related deaths, but Institute of Epidemiology, Diseases Control and Research (IEDCR) confirmed 47 deaths from dengue after analysing 80 of these deaths.

Meanwhile, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) found Aedes larvae at 258 houses in its 36 wards during the ongoing combing operation against Aedes mosquitoes.

Apart from that, the DNCC teams found the environment of 3,123 houses favourable for spreading the viral disease during the drive that covered a total of 9,736 houses and establishments.

At the same time, a mobile court led by DNCC executive magistrate Sajid Anwar fined a construction firm named GS Construction Tk 0.2 million after finding Aedes larvae on the site.
