Two roundtables on Day 2

October 29, 2008 00:00:00

Two roundtables will be held on the second day of the International Business Conference (IBC) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre (BCFCC) in the city November 1.
The roundtables are 'Global Economic Shift to Asia' and 'Does Bangladesh have a niche in Asia?'
The participants of the roundtable on Global Economic Shift to Asia will look to assess the impact on Asia of the weakening economic growth around the world, a press release of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) said.
Economic growth is weakening around the world, reflecting the fallout from the subprime mortgage crisis and the associated financial market turbulence in Europe and the US.
But has this triggered a major shift globally of capital and industries to Asia? What are the possible economic scenarios?-are the questions the discussants in this session will try to address.
The high-profile session would be conducted by Prof Rehman Sobhan, Chairman of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).
On the other hand, the discussants of the roundtable on Does Bangladesh have a niche in Asia? are Shahagir Bakth Faruk, President, BBCC, UK, Lutfey Siddiqui, Managing Director, Barclays Capital, Asia-Pacific Singapore, Ifty Islam, Managing Partner, AT Capital Partners, Dhaka, and Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) President Latifur Rahman.
Over the last one decade Bangladesh has emerged as a vibrant market economy. Private sector-led growth as well as exports coupled with agricultural development have given Bangladesh an opportunity to work towards a middle-income country. But much remains to be done. Can Bangladesh be the processing hub of Asia?-this will be in focus of the session, which will be coordinated by Amb. Farooq Sobhan, President of Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI).
