Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) AK Azad Chowdhury said on Saturday they are going to recommend the government to appoint administrators to at least eight private universities for four to six months, reports UNB.
Addressing a press conference, the UGC chair said they are going to request the chancellor of universities -- the President -- through the education ministry for the appointment of administrators of his choice to eradicate the illegal extension activities by eight-nine private universities.
Under the Private Universities Act 2010, there is a prohibition that private universities cannot open any branch or new campus, but some of the universities have opened their branches, he added.
Azad Chowdhury also noted that the UGC is also mounting pressure on some of the private universities to cut their 'extremely high' tuition fees.
Azad Chowdhury also said they are following a restrictive policy to approve subjects of arts and humanities in new universities.
Observing that subjects like Philosophy, Sanskrit, Pali, Persian and Arabic do not have much marketability in these days, the UGC chair said now they are discouraging the universities to open such subjects.
"We're seriously considering the practicability, marketability and employability of subjects for the approval of subjects in higher education institutions," he observed.
The UGC is also advocating for a strong industry-university link up to ensure the employability of the subjects to be introduced, he added.
