The new British government plans to limit the number of workers entering the United Kingdom from outside Europe, a move taken to get Britain back to work and reduce the need for migrants.
Home Secretary Theresa May announced the government plan Monday, which aims at reducing net immigration to the levels of the 1990s and to keep the flow confined to tens of thousands rather than hundreds of thousands.
"This government believes that Britain can benefit from migration but not uncontrolled migration. I recognise the importance of attracting the brightest and the best to ensure strong economic growth, but unlimited migration places unacceptable pressure on public services," she was quoted as saying, according to the British High Commission in Dhaka.
Introducing a limit on migrants from outside Europe coming to the UK is part of the government plans to amend the country's vast immigration system.
The immigration cap was one of the Conservatives' flagship policies during the election campaign but there has been speculation that it could be watered down in the face of opposition from the City and some Tory ministers.
