The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General is distressed at the mounting death toll in the two-day violent mutiny by members of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), reports UNB.

He condemns such brutal acts of violence, and extends his deepest sympathy to the victims, to their families and to the people and Government of Bangladesh.

The chief executive of the world body called for calm and the resolution of this situation without further violence.

The UN system in Bangladesh also extended their most profound sympathy to all those affected by these "barbarous" acts of violence, and to the people and Government of Bangladesh during this time of intense shock and unfathomable grief.

"We pray for the departed souls that they may rest in peace. And we hope that all will unite to help recovering from this national tragedy in a spirit of peace and national oneness, for the greater interest of the nation," said an announcement from the UN system in Dhaka.
