The US government has voiced its grave concern over the ongoing spate of violence in Bangladesh as Washington sees no 'justification' for such actions in a democratic country.
"The United States is gravely concerned by the ongoing unrest and violence in Bangladesh. We deplore the unconscionable attacks, including bus burnings, throwing incendiary devices, and train derailments that have killed and wounded innocent victims," said the US Department of State.
Marie Harf, a spokesperson for the Department of State, issued a statement on February 5 about the current situation in Bangladesh amid a prolonged blockade called by a political coalition led by BNP.
The statement further said: "We condemn in the strongest terms the use of violence for political objectives. There is simply no justification for such actions in a democratic Bangladesh."
Also mentioning that all Bangladeshis must have the right and the ability to express their views peacefully, the Department of State also called on the government to provide the necessary space for peaceful political activity and also urged all parties to instruct their members to refrain from violence.
Meanwhile, expressing his deep concern over the continuing loss of life and property and detrimental effect on the economy due to the turmoil, the British High Commissioner in Dhaka Thursday also called upon all parties to refrain from inciting or committing acts of violence and intimidation
In another development, a group of foreign diplomats held a parley with some the leaders of ruling Awami League and its ally Jatiya Party at the residence of the European Union ambassador in Dhaka on Thursday night over the situation.
