Water submerges almost entire Ctg city

CHITTAGONG, June 22: Torrential rains over the last three days until Sunday caused severe water-logging that paralysed normal life in the port city and left a number of people marooned in low-lying areas.

Heavy downpour overnight accompanied by tidal water of the Karnaphuli river submerged almost the entire city Sunday, leaving five million people in utter sufferings.

Water flooded parts of the railway track at Sitakunda, forcing the authorities concerned to suspend train movement. Water was flooding the Navy Gate area near Madam Bibir Hat on the Dhaka-Chittagong railway route.

Meghna Express coming to Chittagong from Chandpur, Udayan Express from Sylhet and Dhaka-bound Karnaphuli Express remained stranded at different points.

Flights of Biman Bangladesh Airlines and different private airlines were cancelled, civil aviation authority said.

Cargo handling in the Chittagong Port remained halted, as lighterage vessels could not reach the outer anchorage of the port. Activities in the port jetties were also suspended, although containerized cargo handling was partially operational.

Delivery of cargo from the port to different destinations remained suspended, as roads in different parts of the district were submerged, especially in the southern part.

Office-goers, teachers and students of different educational institutions also suffered a lot. Most children did not venture to come out of their homes, as most of the city roads and lanes were over-flooded with knee-deep water.

Business activities in the wholesale markets and retail shops also remained suspended. Some warehouses at Khatunganj, Chaktai, Rajakhali, Pahartali and Asadganj areas were reported to have gone under water.

Sufferings mounted in Bakolia, Chawkbazar, Oxygen area, Hamzarbag, Muradpur, Aturar Depot, Sholashahar, Bahaddarhat, Shulakbahar, Katalgonj, Kapashgola, Chawkbazar, Panchlaish, DC Road, Chandgaon, Mohra, Agrabad, Chotapool, Baropool, Saraipara, Patenga and Sagorika areas in the port city.

Among the upazilas, Patiya was the worst suffering area, where people of a number of villages including Chanhara, Bhatikhain and Pikepara were in utter distress.
