The World Bank will provide $700 million to Bangladesh for Rohingyas and the host communities in Bangladesh, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said on Tuesday.
Of the amount, $315 million will be given as grant for the Rohingyas and the rest $385 million will be provided to support the community in Cox's Bazar as soft loan, the minister said while addressing a press briefing at the foreign ministry.
"The country director of the World Bank told me about this assistance during a meeting with me today," Dr Hasan added.
The minister said that the World Bank country director also told him that they want to further deepen its cooperation with Bangladesh.
On the issue of Rohingya repatriation, the minister said that he has a meeting with his Myanmar counterpart in Uganda on the sidelines of the NAM Summit in Kampala and he found the Myanmar minister very positive about the repatriation.
"I told him that we should anyhow start the repatriation process and he was of the same opinion with me" the minister added.
Replying to a question whether the government would consider communicating with the Myanmar insurgents for repatriation who are reportedly controlling large part of Rakhine State, he said that Bangladesh is dealing only with the Myanmar government on this issue.
The minister said Uganda is interested to lease its land to Bangladeshis for agricultural projects.
Bangladeshi entrepreneurs can avail the opportunity, he noted.
