Garments sale in the city's wholesale market on occasion of the Eid festival is yet to pick up due to sluggish economic activities in the aftermath of recent floods, businessmen said.
The businessmen of the cities five main hubs -- Zinzira, Sadarghat, Gausia, Urdu Road and Paltan-Gulistan -- fear that almost 50 per cent products might remain unsold this year.
Huge amount of investment will be stuck up if the sale of garments does not pick up, the businessmen said.
Under the circumstances, frustration has gripped the wholesale businessmen of Zinzira, Sadarghat, Gausia, Urdu Road and Paltan-Gulistan, which used to meet almost 80 per cent demand for garments during the Eid occasion.
Traditionally, wholesale garments business is normally completed by the third week of the holy fasting month so that retailers across the country have sufficient time to sell them.
"The amount of daily sale has fallen to one third compared to the previous year's Eid sale," said a wholesaler in Zinzira.
A large quantity of unsold items has already been piled up affecting economic activities of markets near the Sadarghat launch terminal, he added.
Besides, the businessmen expected to boost their sale around this time also because of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of Hindu Community, which will commence immediately after the Eid-ul Fitr.
Nazrul Mollah, a leading wholesaler of the Gausia market, said he has not seen a retail businessman visiting his shop twice to lift garments.
But many retailers from across the country visited his shop more than twice last year, he said, adding they had to remain busy till mid-night around this time of the Ramadan month.
