World Bank Vice President for the South Asia Region Martin Raiser will arrive in Dhaka today (Monday) on his maiden visit to Bangladesh.
During his three-day visit, Raiser will meet Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and other government officials and discuss World Bank support to address Bangladesh's development priorities.
He will also meet development partners, leaders from the private sector, civil society and think tanks, said a press release.
"Bangladesh has made impressive achievements in development and economic growth. The World Bank is proud to be a partner in this remarkable journey for the past 50 years," said Mr Raiser.
"As the countries in South Asia grapple with a multitude of shocks from COVID to climate change and rising global inflation, I look forward to learning about Bangladesh's experience in building resilience," he added.
A German national, Mr Raiser assumed the role of the World Bank vice president for the South Asia Region on July 1, 2022. Before taking on this role, he worked as the country director for China, Mongolia, and director for Korea. He also held the position of the country director for Turkey and Brazil.
Bangladesh is in talks with the World Bank to get US$1.5 billion as budget support during the next three years.
Of the total sum, the country is expecting $250 million for the "Bangladesh Second Recovery and Resilience DPC" scheme and $250 million for the "Bangladesh Green, Resilient and Inclusive Development Policy Credit (GRID DPC)" programme.
However, the projects for $1.0 billion more are yet to be selected - these are likely to be decided during the visit of Mr Raiser.
