10 injured as students, staffs clash at National Medical Institute

FE Report | March 02, 2014 00:00:00

At least 10 people were injured Saturday in a clash between the students and staffs of National Medical Institute in old part of the city.

According to eye witnesses, the clash erupted at about 11:30 am when a group of students ransacked the college buildings and attacked the staffs of the institute as a sequel to a previous incident on Thursday when one Babul, a staff of the institute, slapped a student. The police were seen inactive to control the situation, it is alleged.

The patients of National Medical Institute left the hospital due to the clash while many patients were forced to go out from the emergency department. The ailing patients went to the nearby hospitals including Dhaka Medical College and Sir Salimullah Medical College.

The situation came under control at about 1:30 pm following the intervention of the local lawmaker Quazi Firoz Rashid. At 2:00 pm he sat in a meeting with the authority and the medical staffs. He said the hospital authority should have brought the situation under control but failed to do so.

Hospital director Abdus Salam said he was not given enough time to resolve the matter. He said two staffs were terminated temporarily after their involvement was proved in primary investigation.
