10 Rohingya people drown as trawler sinks at Teknaf

COX'S BAZAR, Aug 06: At least 10 Rohingya people drowned in Teknaf coastal area of the district when a trawler carrying them from Myanmar to Bangladesh sank in the Bay on Tuesday morning.

The accident took place in the morning when a good number of Rohingyas were fleeing to Cox's Bazar by a trawler amid the fighting between Arakan Army and Myanmar Army.

After the trawler capsize, some people managed to swim ashore, but many went missing.

So far, local people have recovered 10 bodies in Habirchhara and Rajarchhara ghat areas.

The deceased include seven women, two men and a child.

The survivors said that there were 29 Rohingya women, men and children in the boat which sank due to the strong waves at the sea.

Local people of Teknaf said that explosions were heard in Myanmar. Houses in Teknaf area were shaking with the sound of mortar shells and powerful grenade explosions.

Amid the situation, Rohingyas attempt to infiltrate into Bangladesh territory.

Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer Adnan Chowdhury said that the Rohingya citizens who were rescued alive in the trawler capsize were kept in the BGB custody. Legal action was being taken against them.
