CHATTOGRAM, Oct 19: More than 100 shops were burnt down in a fire at Jahur Hawker Market in the port city on Saturday, engulfing cloths and blankets.
Sources said the fire, which was originated from a short circuit at a shop in the market in Lal Dhighi area around 4:15 am, fast spread to other outlets.
Fire brigade officials said there might be several millions' worth of damage in the blaze.
Fifteen firefighting vehicles managed to control the fire after hours of a hectic effort. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties in the fire.
Fire brigade deputy assistant director Mohammed Jashim Uddin said, "Fifteen firefighting units rushed to the scene soon from Nandan Kanon and Dewan Bazar fire stations to extinguish the fire."
Organising secretary of Jahur Hawkers Market Merchant Association Fazlul Amin said, "A total of 30 shops on the ground floor were gutted in the fire."
"Besides, more than 70 shops at the adjacent Jalalabad and Shahjalal markets also got damaged in the devastating fire. The loss might be 200 millions."
Mohammed Azim Uddin, a shop-owner, said, "I have recently invested for upcoming winter. But my investment got lost in the fire."
