SIRAJGANJ, Dec 1 (UNB): With a promise to lead a normal life, a big band of 104 outlaws in the district today (Saturday) ceremonially surrendered to police under a rehabilitation plan.
Regional commander Rezaul Karim and local leaders Janak, Bishu and Altaf of the Sarbahara Party led their comrades out of the underworld to Katagari Bazar ground in Tarash Upazila in the morning. At a function there they said on swearing that they would, henceforth, begin their life 'anew'.
Police, however, made spot arrest of the four leaders on charge of murder, robbery and extortion for the sake of initiating a legal process of their reclamation.
The rest 100 were greeted by presenting flowers to their hands.
Acting Police Super Nazrul Hossain, Assistant Police Super (circle) Ayub Ali, Tarash thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moshiur Rahman and chairmen of three union parishads (Ups) attended the surrender ceremony.
In his speech, the Acting Police Super assured them of extending cooperation in leading a healthy and normal life. "And police would never harass others who want to return to the path of light from the dark," he also said.
The police official also announced to get khas lands allocated and other facilities sanctioned through the district administration for the sarbaharas who came out of their hideouts.
Back in the period of 1996-21 Awami League rule, a few hundred leftist underground operatives had surrendered under a government-announced amnesty.
