Today is the tenth anniversary of the bloody 'BDR mutiny'.

On this day in 2009, brutal carnage took place at the headquarters of the then Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), now Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), killing 74 persons, including 57 army officers.

The government, different socio-political organisations, family members and relatives of the victims will observe the day with due respect.

Special prayers will be offered at the BGB Pilkhana headquarters today, seeking divine blessing for the departed souls.

Relatives and family members will also offer Quran khawani and milad mahfil and pay homage to the lost ones at Banani Army Graveyard where the martyred officers were buried.

Wreaths are expected to be laid on their graves on behalf of President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The home ministry, the three services and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) director general, among others, are also expected to pay tributes to them.

Several hundred BDR men rose up in armed revolt at Durbar Hall during the three-day 'BDR Week' at Pilkhana on February 25, 2009, and killed 74.

The bloodshed ended the following day (February 26) with the surrender of firearms, ammunition and grenades through negotiations between the government and rebels.

Following the mutiny, the paramilitary force was renamed Border Guard Bangladesh.
