11 city areas identified as dengue hotspots as 9 more die

FE REPORT | July 24, 2023 00:00:00

Amid an alarming rise in dengue cases in the city, some people continue to place their faith in ojha (traditional healer). In one particular instance, as is seen in this photo, a mother brought her dengue-infected son to an ojha for treatment instead of going to a hospital. The government registered a record 2,292 new hospitalisations due to dengue in the last 24 hours ending Sunday at 8:00 am throughout the country. It takes the tally this year to 32,977.

Of the total, 1,064 were from Dhaka and 1,228 from outside Dhaka.

The death toll from the mosquito-borne disease rose by nine to 176 in a 24-hour count on Sunday.

With this, the total casualties stood at 176, including 139 from Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

According to the DGHS, the dengue death rate is five year high this year.

The total dengue cases rose to 32,977. Of the total cases, 19,949 were from Dhaka, added DGHS.

Of the total admitted, 25,626 patients made recovery and returned home, and of them, 15,661 were from Dhaka.

A total of 7,175 people are now being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 4,149 are from Dhaka.

Meanwhile, the DGHS said it found a higher number of dengue patients had been admitted to hospitals from 11 areas of the city with six areas of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and five areas of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

This information was given in the regular media briefing of the DGHS on Sunday.

Jatrabari, Mugda, Kadmatoli, Jurain, Dhanmondi and Basabo under DSCC are the places where more dengue patients are coming. And, among the places of DNCC are Uttara, Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Tejgaon and Badda.

Md Habibul Ahsan Talukder, Director of DGHS (Hospitals and Clinics) gave this information at the briefing.

Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the highest in the history of the country.

However, the number of deaths may increase as dengue has taken a terrible form, the concerned people fear.

Experts fear that the situation will worsen in August and September compared to July as the rainy season came late this year.
