13 cleared to contest mayoral polls

JP candidate's nomination cancelled

The candidates of Dhaka South City Corporation whose candidacy for mayoral election was declared valid seen at the office of the Returning Officer in the city on Thursday — bdnews24.com

Out of fourteen, nomination papers of thirteen mayoral candidates were found to be valid for contesting elections in Dhaka south and north city corporations, officials said.

After scrutinising nomination papers of the mayoral aspirants, the returning officers' offices concerned on Thursday cancelled candidacy of Jatiya Party (JP) mayoral candidate Brig General (retd) Kamrul Islam from Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) after his name was not found on the DNCC voter list.

"We scrutinised nomination paper of Kamrul Islam but we did not find his name on the voter list. So, we cannot accept his candidacy here," returning officer (DNCC) Abul Kashem said after finishing the scrutiny.

Candidacies of six other contenders in the DNCC mayoral election were found to be valid.

They are: Atiqul Islam of Awami League, Tabith Awal of BNP, Sajedul Huq Rubel of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Shahin Khan of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), Sheikh Md Fazle Bari Masud of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, and Anisur Rahman Dewan of National People's Party (NPP).

On the other hand, candidacies of all seven mayoral aspirants in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) were found to be valid in accordance with the announcement of the returning officer (DSCC).

The valid candidates are Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh of Bangladesh Awami League, BNP-backed Ishraque Hossain, Saifuddin Ahmed Milan of JP, Abdur Rahman of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Baharane Sultan of NPP and Abdus Samad of Gono Front.

After the announcement by returning officer (DSCC) Abdul Baten, candidates of the ruling Awami League and BNP talked with the media regarding the upcoming January 30 elections.

Calling upon voters to come to the polling centres without any fear on the voting day, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh expressed his optimism of a fair and participatory election slated for January 30.

"I think the election will be held in a festive mood with participation of all," he said after assuring the Election Commission of following electoral codes of conduct by himself and his party supporters.

Terming vote a civic right, BNP-backed candidate Ishraque Hossain urged the citizens to elect their mayor through casting their votes.

"I will follow electoral codes of conduct and I am requesting BNP-nominated councilors to obey it also," he added.

In accordance with the affidavits submitted by the mayoral candidates, Taposh has the highest annual income of Tk 98.01 million followed by Tabith's Tk 41.02 million.

The annual income of JP's Saifuddin is shown at Tk 13.06 million and that of Atiqul is Tk 12.09 million while Ishraque's annual income is shown at Tk 9.158 million.

NPP mayoral candidate for the DSCC Bahrane Sultan Bahar showed that he had an annual income of Tk 0.15 million while Ganofront candidate Abdus Samad Sujan had an annual income of Tk 0.24 million.

In terms of accumulating wealth, BNP's Tabith and his wife have moveable property worth Tk 686.8 million while movable property worth Tk 78.50 million has been claimed by his rival Atiqul and his wife.

Taposh and his wife have immovable property worth Tk 209.20 million and Ishraque and his wife Tk 49.80 million.

In terms of bank loans, Atiqul's business organisations owe Tk 5.91 billion to different banks and his rival Tabith's business entities have loans to the tune of Tk 3.0 billion.

Ishraque has taken a loan of Tk 6.10 million from his mother while his rival AL candidate Taposh has liabilities worth Tk 46.70 million.
