FE REPORT

A violent clash took place between students of Dhaka College and Dhaka City College in the capital's Science Laboratory area on Wednesday, leaving at least 15 students injured.

The incident brought traffic to a halt in the busy area, causing inconveniences for commuters.

According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner Shah Mostafa Tariquzzaman, tensions arose around noon when Dhaka College students gathered in front of the City College gate following an altercation over boarding a bus the previous day.

The situation worsened around 3:30 pm when City College students took to the streets, blocking the area and engaging in clashes with Dhaka College students.

Dhaka College students claimed that City College students stopped their buses and launched an assault on them though they were unsure of the specific cause.

Members of law enforcement agencies fired tear gas shells and sound grenades to disperse the two groups.

The injured, most of whom are from Dhaka College students,

were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. A total of 11 individuals received treatment there.

Witnesses said that both sides used non-lethal weapons, including sticks and iron rods, during the incident. The conflict coincided with Dhaka College's 184th founding anniversary celebrations.

A similar clash in October had prompted the City College authorities to shut the campus for 20 days, with the college reopening only Tuesday.

Police are investigating the incident. Traffic movement in the area resumed around 5:00 pm.
