1,611 new Covid cases, seven deaths in BD

Bangladesh recorded 1,611 cases of COVID-19 in a day on Friday, taking the overall tally of infections to 1,988,101, report agencies.

The death toll from the disease climbed by seven in 24 hours to 29,195, according to the latest government data released on Friday.

As many as 9,580 samples were tested across the country, for a positivity rate of 16.82 percent, higher than the average rate since the beginning of the pandemic.

Among the eight divisions, Dhaka logged the highest number of cases, with 1,128 infections.

Another 890 people recovered from the illness nationwide, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,911,367.

The latest figures put the recovery rate at 96.14 percent and the mortality rate at 1.47 percent.

Globally, the overall number of Covid cases has now surpassed 558 million amid a rise in new infections in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

According to the latest global data, the total case count mounted to 558,531,927 and the death toll from the virus reached 6,368,901 Friday morning.

The US has recorded 90,065,165 cases so far and 1,045,080 people have died from the virus in the country, the data shows.

India reported as many as 18,418 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, taking the total tally to 43,587,302, as per the data released by the federal health ministry Thursday.

Besides, 35 deaths due to the pandemic were reported since Tuesday morning, taking the total toll to 525,305.
