19,500 BNP men arrested since last week of October Claims Rizvi

FE REPORT | December 06, 2023 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday alleged that the law enforcing agencies have arrested over 19,500 of its leaders and activists in 534 cases so far since the last week of October.

Of them, more than 285 leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organisations have been arrested in the last 24 hours till Tuesday afternoon across the country.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the claim alleging that the ruling party has been using the law enforcers to harass them by all means.

He made the remarks while addressing a press conference virtually.

Terming the upcoming election a 'shared' one, he said the general secretary of Awami League said that the electoral seats sharing of 14 parties will be finalised by a day or two.

Mr Rizvi also said those members of the so-called alliance will get a little.

"The result of this (election) will be announced on January 7. The will of the public is not an issue here," he said.

Criticising that the government is unaware of the country's future, he said the government does not want to pay heed to the country's future.

"The country's RMG sector is now on the brink of collapse," he said, adding if any sanction is imposed on the sector, huge number of men and women will become jobless.

"The government doesn't think about the future of 180 million people of the country, as well as its future," he said.

Mr Rizvi also claimed that the country's foreign currency reserve has hit the floor owing to looting by the government and its allies.

Urging the country's people to raise their voice against the government, he said another spell of 48-hour blockade will begin today (Wednesday) dawn.
