The ongoing anti-government movement has entered a new phase as the BNP-led 20-party alliance has announced its programme to bring out protest processions across the country on Sunday.
The alliance made the announcement through a statement signed by BNP Joint Secretary General Barkatullah Bulu on Saturday, the 82nd day of nonstop countrywide blockade.
The statement also said that the nonstop countrywide blockade would continue as usual.
"The BNP-led 20-party alliance will bring out protest processions in every district, upazila, police station, municipality and city corporation on Sunday, protesting the countrywide mass killings of party leaders and activists and demanding return of all missing leaders, including party's Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed," the statement said.
In the press statement, the alliance urged the countrymen to observe the programme peacefully and successfully.
Earlier on Tuesday, the alliance had apparently halted its countrywide hartal programme for Wednesday and Thursday despite having enforced hartals on weekdays continuously since February 01.
As the country geared up to celebrate its 45th Independence Day on Wednesday, the opposition alliance abandoned its practice of extending by two days the three-day hartals it customarily called on Sundays.
However, no procession or picketing was seen in support of the blockade in the city. Presence of motorised vehicles was almost normal on the streets.
A large number of law enforcers remained deployed in different parts of the capital to fend off any trouble.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia issued the directive to enforce the blockade for an indefinite period on January 5 after having failed to come out of her Gulshan office to join a planned rally of the 20-party alliance in the city to mark 'Democracy Killing Day'.    bdsmile@gmail.com
