241 more die, 13,817 positive

The daily death toll from Covid-19 rose further to 241, while the number of new virus cases and its test positivity rate showed a slightly downward trend in Bangladesh on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the total fatalities from coronavirus were recorded at 235 across the country, according to the official figures.

However, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 13,817 new Covid-19 cases during the last 24 hours until 8:00 am on Wednesday against the previous day's 15,776. The highest number of fatalities from Covid-19 was reported at 93 in Dhaka division, followed by Chattogram division with 68, Khulna division 36, Rangpur division 15, and Rajshahi 12.

With the latest daily count, the total death toll from coronavirus reached 21,638, and its total caseloads nearly 1.31 million since the virus was first detected in Bangladesh in March 2020.

A total of 49,514 samples were tested, including antigen-based rapid tests, while 51,902 samples were collected across the country during the last 24 hours.

The virus test positivity rate inched down to 27.91 per cent on the day from the previous day's 28.54 per cent. A total of 16,297 people recovered from the coronavirus disease across the country during the last 24 hours, said a DGHS press release.

The rate of recovery from the coronavirus disease was reported at 86.80 per cent on the day.

However, the rate of fatalities from Covid-19 remained static at 1.65 per cent.

Meanwhile, some 2,23,288 and 10,588 more people received the first and second doses of Chinese Sinopharm vaccine respectively, while the government administered 89,248 first doses of Moderna vaccine, and 12,577 second doses of Astrazeneca-Covishield vaccine on Wednesday.
