KHULNA, May 28: A good number of deer were found dead or sick in the Sundarbans on Tuesday as cyclone 'Remal' wreaked havoc in the coastal belt of the country.
The forest department recovered 26 dead deer in different places of the Sundarbans and also rescued 17 sick deer till Tuesday noon, officials said.
The sick deer were given treatment and released into the forest, they said.
Mihir Kumar, conservator of forests in Khulna region, said a rescue operation was underway.
Kazi Mohammad Nurul Karim, divisional forest officer of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said, "We couldn't go to all places of the forest till now (Tuesday). There was a high tide for about 25 to 30 hours." "I heard many wild animals dying in the forest. We can provide more information to the media later."
Mr Karim further said the wooden jetty of Kotka center was washed away. Reservoirs of fresh water for foresters, fishermen, hawkers and wildlife were inundated with saline water.
The pool of fresh water in Katka of the Sundarbans disappeared into the sea. Moreover, small trawlers were damaged by the tide. Many timbers were washed away.
In another development, the saline water of the sea entered fresh water of ponds in the forest due to the tidal surge. The forest department's office and staff accommodation, jetty and other facilities were damaged by the cyclone.
