2G licence renewal decision today

A panel on 2G licence renewal will sit today (Thursday) to decide on renewal of licence of four mobile phone operators. The operators will be informed about the decision after the meeting, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Zia Ahmed told bdnews24.com Tuesday evening. The telecoms regulator went public with the final policy on the licence renewal on September 11. The operators are supposed to receive the licences within today. Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi and Citycell have already paid licence renewal and spectrum assignment fees. A BTRC official told the news agency that the commission will sit to deliberate on several court directives over payment of the fees. On November 1, the Appellate Division chamber judge Justice M Imman Ali felt embarrassed to hear the petition, prompting the chief justice to send it to Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain.
