A wrecker removes a police pickup van from rail tracks after a train hit it at a level crossing in Sitakunda upazila on Sunday afternoon, leaving three policemen dead and two others injured. — Collected CHATTOGRAM, Aug 27: Three policemen were killed and two others injured as a train struck a pickup truck on patrol in Fakirhat area under Sitakunda Upazila in Chattogram on Sunday noon.
Locals said the accident occurred at the Fakirhat level crossing at 12:30 pm when the patrol truck of police was crossing the level crossing.
Officer-in-Charge of Sitakunda Police Station Tofayel Ahmed said, "Inter-city Sonar Bangla Express headed from Dhaka to Chattogram was also crossing at the same time. It is not yet clear how the accident occurred."
He also said the pickup truck was severely damaged when it was hit and a policeman was killed on the spot. Two others died after they were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Two other police personnel, including a sub inspector, were also injured in the accident. They were receiving treatment at the hospital, he added.
The identities of the victims could not be known immediately.
