Three members of a family were brutally killed by unknown miscreants at their house at Jatrabari in the capital Thursday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Bithi Rahman (40), her mother-in-law Sufia Khatun (75) and her husband Mizanur Rahman Milton who resided on the second floor of a four-storey building at 37/1 Shahid Faruk Sarak of the area.
On information, police recovered the bodies of Bithi and Sufia and rescued critically wounded Mizan whom they sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 11:00 am.
Sub-Inspector Gias Uddin of Jatrabari police station quoting a security guard of the building said that Bithi came down from her apartment and told him to bring milk and medicine for her family at about 7:00 am. The security guard found them slaughtered and hacked immediately after his return.
The police suspected that the killers went to the apartment when the security guard went out following the order and hacked Bithi and Sufia by sharp weapons and then confirmed their death by strangulating them. They also shot and slaughtered Mizan, who owned second and third floors of the building.
"It's a premeditated murder," the police said, suspecting that the incident might have happened over land dispute.
"I entered the house after getting no response from inside and found their blood-spattered bodies lying on their bedroom. It was horrible," security guard of the building Akbar told reporters.
Officer-in-Charge of the police station Moniruzzaman said they received some sensational information from dying Mizan on his way to hospital. "I can't disclose it for the sake of investigation," he added.
Locals said there has been a longs-tanding dispute among the brothers over ownership of the building.
Police later picked up two brothers of Mizan - Linkon and Lipton - for interrogation.
